New World Sage Specie Salvia patens (Lamiaceae)

Salvia patens (Lamiaceae)
Today's botany picture is Salvia patens (Lamiaceae), a New World sage species photographed at the Botanic Gardens of Goettingen University

while I was doing my PhD there. This plant has the most amazing blue flower colour, and consequently I was rather bemused to find a few years later that plant breeders have selected and were selling a white variant of this species. What is the point of that? It is like breeding an onion without taste, or a rose that doesn't produce flowers.

Okay, cranky get off my lawn mode deactivate.
